UN warns of “real danger” after bombing of nuclear plant in Ukraine

“Any attack on a nuclear plant is suicide,” said UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

The same UN official expressed hope that international inspectors would be allowed access to the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine.

Zaporizhia, in southeastern Ukraine, is Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, which was seized by the Russians last March but kept its Ukrainian employees.

It is noteworthy that Ukraine announced on Sunday that a worker was injured in a new Russian bombing of the Zaporizhia reactor.

On Saturday, Ukraine and Russia accused each other of being involved in “nuclear terrorism.” The Ukrainian company Energotom blamed Russia for the damage, while the Russian Defense Ministry accused Ukrainian forces of bombing the station.
