Death toll from Herat attack in Afghanistan rises to 46

The death toll from the suicide bombing that took place at a mosque in the northwestern Afghan city of Herat has risen to 46 dead and 84 injured.

An earlier toll had indicated that at least 18 people were killed and 23 others injured in the blast, which initial reports indicated was a “suicide attack.”

The local “Waht” news agency said a suicide bomber blew himself up in the mosque, killing 46 people and wounding 84 others.

The agency released the identities of 18 of those killed and 30 of those injured in the attack.

In turn, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid confirmed in a statement that prominent cleric Maulvi Mujibur Rahman Ansari had been killed in the attack.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack.
